Imagining the Silence, Jungyoon Wie
for solo piano

I began to study composition seriously after I met my composition mentor Dr. Jack Gallagher at the College of Wooster in 2010, and Imagining the Silence is the first full piece I wrote. At the time of writing, I didn’t know what I was doing but looking back at this piece, I’m amazed by how I still use the same musical language now, especially in the use of harmony, register, and my love of neo-classical and romantic styles. Dr. Gallagher favors using split chords (for example, the concurrent use of C# and C§ over the F Major triad in mm. 19-20), and I can hear a lot of him in this piece! Imagining the Silence was my attempt to musically explore what the silence may look like at a deeper leve. Our imaginations, dreams, and emotions may be silent, but we can feel them in our heart.
